SCREEN FREE WEEK

THANK YOU to everyone who made this years Screen Free Week (SFW) another huge success!

Hundreds of PGS students participated in a multitude of activities and it was a pleasure to see so many children excited and willing to turn off their electronics in favor of trying something new!

From the Piney's Coin Challenge to the Celebration Picnic this past weekend it has been a tremendous collective effort to pull this program off.  Without the invaluable efforts from parents, teachers, office staff and Farmington Valley business, this program would not be possible.  We thank you for your extreme generosity of talent and time!  We are proud this tradition has become something our students eagerly anticipate each year!

See you next year!

As many of you know, the Avon Road Race will take place on Sunday, May 21st.  You may not know that the teachers and staff of Pine Grove will be hosting a lemonade and hot dog stand to raise money towards the Sandy Jarem Dollars for Scholars program at the race (stands will be located on playground side of the building- easy in and out parking is possible at Thompson Brook School).  Sandy was our beloved secretary who loved seeing kids smile and play, and she made us all smile every day! Sandy was very community-minded and she vividly exemplified the maxim, “Actions speak louder than words.” Staff members will be cooking up hot dogs, mixing up lemonade and selling a variety of sweet treats. All proceeds will go towards scholarships offered to Avon's graduating seniors in Sandy's name. Participation in the race is not required to visit the food stands. It will be a fun morning all around.

SCREEN FREE WEEK

Screen Free Week began with a burst of fun during Friday's presentation brought to us by BubbleMania!  We've attached a file of tips, tricks and a top secret bubble formula straight from bubble-ologist Casey Carle for students to concoct their own bubble experiments.  We ended Day 1 with Bingo Night, which was a hit!  Thank you to all the families who participated.  We're looking forward to the week ahead!  Please remember to delete your sign-up if your child will not be able to attend an activity, as well as send a note detailing which activity your student will be attending.

Golden Book

Students -- check your desks between Monday May 15th, and Thursday, May 18th!  Each morning, one lucky student will have a Golden Book waiting for them!  Take the book home that night and write down some Screen Free Week activities that you’ve participated in.  Bring the book back to school the next morning and you’ll get to share your SFW activities with the whole school during morning announcements!

Tokens 4 Treasures

Fill out a TV token (these were sent home in your SFW packets a few weeks ago) for each SFW activity that you complete and don’t forget to have it signed by a parent or other adult.  Activities can be those offered by the PTO or anything else that you do instead of “plugging in”.  Visit ScreenFree.org for more ideas!  Put your completed TV tokens in the TV screen box outside the office.  We have several awesome prizes to give away!  Winners will be drawn at random at the Family Picnic Celebration on Friday, May 19th.

Wellness/Outreach

The PTO Outreach Committee and PGS students are teaming up in April to celebrate Earth Day! Our three major grocery stores (Big Y, ShopRite, Stop &Shop) have graciously given us 600+ brown grocery bags for students to decorate in Earth Day themes/colors/words. Students will be decorating the bags in school next week and PTO Outreach will redistribute them back to the stores so members of our neighboring community can receive the students' messages of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Stop & Shop customers, keep an eye out next time you shop because the PGS decorated bags will be on display during Earth-awareness month! Send us your pictures of our PGS Earth Day bags in action to outreach@pgspto.com

Publishing Center The book cover making process is on video and supplies are ready to go.   We are looking for a Coordinator to contact room parents and volunteers for typing (cut/pasting) the stories that the kids write during the year.  Approximately, 250 books are printed each year.  Coordinating can be done from home.  Most of the “coordinating” is done in the spring but we are hoping to find someone by January.  This does not have to be an in-school volunteer position.  The publishing center is located in the library so you get to see kids A LOT.

Enrichment- After School Classes/Programs – Starts this Week!!

Enrichment programs start this week directly after school at PGS.  We hope that your child enjoys the afterschool experience!

If your child is registered in any of the variety of programs being offered this Fall, make sure that you send in a dismissal note alerting the teacher and office that your child is staying afterschool and specify the program.  Please note that snacks are not allowed to be consumed during the afterschool programs.  However, feel free to send in an extra snack for your child to eat in his or her classroom before dismissal.

It is PTO Policy that in order for an Afterschool Program to run, an adult volunteer must be also be present.  For that reason, you may be asked to cover a class that your child is enrolled in throughout the year.  Thank you in advance for your assistance!!  Thank you also for your support in enrolling in the Enrichment Programs.  A portion of the proceeds from these afterschool programs benefits the PGSPTO.

Lastly, if you have an interest in leading a program or can refer us to someone who does, we always welcome new talent to join the diverse and growing lineup of Enrichment Program instructors at PGS.

School Supply Boxes

This year families ordered on line and boxes were either picked up at school or delivered to the classroom. We sold 165 kits and the fundraiser helped provide school supplies to kids at Pine Grove who need them.  In addition, we were able to provide some classroom supplies to teachers.  The PTO used SchoolKidz, a Staples company,  for this fundraiser to make school supply shopping very easy. The position to run this fundraiser is OPEN. Dear PGS Students & Parents,

From Friday, May 12th to Friday, May 19th, Pine Grove School will be participating in Screen-Free Week (SFW).  We are so excited!  Screen-Free Week is a nationwide event sponsored by the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood and celebrated by schools, families and other civic and community groups each year.

During Screen-Free Week, millions of children and adults pledge to spend seven days screen-free (with the exception of school and work, of course).  Instead of watching TV, playing video games or tinkering around on iPads, they tend to read, play, think, create, get physically active, and spend more time with friends and family.

Many parents choose to join their children in foregoing screen-based entertainment all week long and engaging in other fun activities.  This kind of support is the best thing you can do to ensure that your child will have a successful and beneficial experience.

In order to keep kids occupied, we have worked tirelessly to provide a wide range of fun activities for them to participate in throughout the week.  A brief listing of activities is included (see attached).  Online activity enrollment will begin at 8:00 pm on Monday, May 1st and conclude at 8:00 pm on Monday, May 8th.  Visit our website at www.pgspto.com/home/sfw for more information.

Also, we are bringing back some of the popular programs from last year (see back) – all intended to ramp up the SFW excitement.  Our goal is to make SFW an event to be eagerly anticipated by students, parents, and staff alike.  And if the hugely successful Piney ‘s Coin Challenge is any indication, we’re off to a fantastic start!

All week long, activities will be offered, ranging from, dodgeball, flag football, aquatics games, rock climbing, teacher-led bike rides etc.  The list goes on and on!

Our SFW will wrap up on Friday, May 19th with our celebration picnic!

We think this is shaping up to be one of the best Screen Free Weeks ever!  Hopefully, the students will agree with us!  As always, thanks so much for your endless support of PGS, the PTO, and the variety of programs that we offer each year.  Here’s to being unplugged!

In your Screen Free Week Packet, each student will receive a “Pledge Card.”   Children participating in Screen Free Week are asked to bring back your signed pledges to school between April 24th and 27th.  Pledges will be posted on the walls of the cafeteria by grade.  On the 28th during each lunch period, a random pledge will be chosen by a staff member.  The winners will receive first dibs on any one activity of their choice during Screen Free Week.

Fill out a TV token (see attached) for each SFW activity that you complete and don’t forget to have it signed by a parent or other adult.  Activities can be those offered by the PTO or anything else that you do instead of “plugging in.”  Visit http://www.screenfree.org/screen-free-activities/ for links to suggested activities.  Put your completed TV tokens in the TV Screen outside of the office.  We have awesome prizes to give away……...The more tokens you complete, the better your chances to win!  Winners will be drawn at random at the celebration on May 19th.

WELLNESS CALENDAR –

This year, the PTO Wellness Committee and Pine Grove’s School Climate Committee, led by Mr. RW, are coordinating our Wellness Events and aligning them with the Pillars of Character. We hope that by making home-school connections through the events and PGS Town Meetings, our students and staff will generalize and expand on the service efforts long after the events have passed!

In September & October, we began the discussions for this outreach model and began with a fabulous Pumpkin Picking family event at the Pickin’ Patch! Meanwhile in school, students were introduced to the concepts of Citizenship and Fairness and generated "Social Contracts" to emphasize those lessons!

Looking ahead to November & December, the Pillars of Character concept of Fairness will be addressed through four coordinated activities:

Ongoing in November: The student council at PGS is collecting non-perishable foods for their Turkey Trot. Food donations will be made to the local Food Bank.

Thank you to ALL the room parent volunteers this year.  You make the classroom much more fun and are a valued resource for the teachers and staff at PGS.  Please consider being a room parent again next year.

Thank you to the AMAZING Co-Chairs of Sycamore Day, Heather Callaghan and Jen Valentine!!  It was a fun filled day; one the kids will remember all summer.  Congrats to Ms. Gladue's class who won the Nolan Cup; the 4th Grade Class Tug of War Champions Trophy.

With over 270 participants in the 5K and Piney handing out medals to all the Fun Run kids it was super fun!!  A beautiful day with so many Pine Grove families out enjoying themselves!!

Special thanks to Leslie Cunningham, this year's organizing committee chair, and her amazing committee: Kristin Bittar, Alescia Ford-Lanza, Brian Janes, Arunita Patra, Dana Storsberg, Nancy Tran, & Natalie Zappone.

Shout outs to Yarina Arjit, Robin Baran, Anthony Weber, Monette Goodrich, Noel Silva, Lindsey Irvine, Adara Buzecan, Christine Narduzzi, Bill Zappone, Mark Sommaruga, Julie Dunn, Jen Greg and the many other volunteers who helped make the event run so smoothly!!

The SFW Committee

Publishing Center  Thank you to Sahra Kraft for all her efforts to publish student books written during the year.  Many of these books were proudly displayed by the authors at the K-3 Open House earlier this month!!

With gratitude, Shawn George, Charlotte Freeman, and Meredith Weidner

Box Tops are BACK!

It's not too late to send in those Box Tops and Labels for Education.  There still are a few days left to send them in.  We will collect Box Tops through Thursday, February 23rd for our March 1st deadline.  Help the PTO earn money for PGS.  We earned $572 with the collection in the fall and are hoping this next submission puts us over our $1,000 goal for the year!!!  Collection envelopes have been distributed to all students.  Send your envelope in with your student or drop it off in the main office in the large collection bin in the right corner inside the office.  Even after this deadline, please continue saving those Box Tops for the next collection.  Every little bit helps!

Room parents -update
Thank you for those who so generously offered to be a room parent this year. You will be notified shortly regarding decisions.

Welcome to the 2016-2017 PGS School Year!!

The goal of the PGS PTO is to enhance and support the educational experience set by teachers and staff for all students.  This is done through a variety of events and programs throughout the year: Decathlon, Halloween Dance, Multicultural Fair, In-class field trips (Hartford Stage, Mystic Aquarium, Roaring Brook Nature Center, Noah Webster House) Screen Free Week, Publishing Center (books written and illustrated by students), etc.  Also, the PTO provides support for the teaching staff through programs such as the volunteer run Copy Center and Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.  All of these great things are paid for by the fundraising efforts throughout the year, our largest event being the Avon Road Race!!  This event raises enough money to fund about 60% of the PTO Budget each year!!  We hope to see you at one or more of these events this year.  Thank you for your continued support!

MULTICULTURAL FAIR – PTO SPONSERED

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make the 2017 Multicultural Fair at PGS so wonderful! This event is loved by the kids, and it's all because of you. Thank you for sharing your culture and your time with all of the students, teachers, and families!

The Multicultural Fair at Pine Grove is a day-long event which celebrates the many cultures our students are from. Each grade gets to spend an hour learning about games, clothing, traditions, and languages from around the world. Parents come together to share a booth about the things they love most about their culture. There are activities, movie clips, music, dancing, and it's a wonderful celebration of the diversity of our students and their families. It's a great time for students to learn more about being global citizens and to have heaps and heaps of fun!

Parents of 4th graders can insert a personalized message by clicking here.
Welcome Back Pine Grove Students!

2016screenfree week

Overview of Screen Free Week

Dear PGS Students & Parents,

From Friday, May 6th to Friday, May 13th, Pine Grove School will be participating in Screen-Free Week (SFW).

Instead of watching TV, playing video games or tinkering around on iPods, they tend to read, play, think, create, get physically active, and spend more time with friends and family.

Studies show that children who watch less TV are more likely to read well and to be physically fit.  Turning off screens also allows for more family time.  Today’s American children spend an average of 7 hours each day on entertainment media!  Screen-Free Week is a great way to jump-start our kids into more reading, learning, and active play.  It’s also a lot of fun!

Many parents choose to join their children in forgoing screen-based entertainment all week long and engaging in other fun activities.  This kind of support is the best thing you can do to ensure that your child will have a successful and beneficial experience.

In order to keep kids occupied, we have worked tirelessly to provide a wide range of fun activities for them to participate in throughout the week.  A brief listing of activities is included (see back).  Online activity enrollment will begin at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, April 26th and conclude at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 3rd.

Also we are bringing back some of the popular programs from last year (see below) – all intended to ramp up the SFW excitement.  Our goal is to make SFW an event to be eagerly anticipated by students, parents and staff alike.  And if the hugely successful Piney Coin Challenge is any indication, we’re off to a fantastic start!

The week will kick-off on Friday, May 6th with a school-wide broadcast entitled, "Fun, Quirky and Downright Crazy Things to do During SFW."  Kids will also be treated to a one-of-a-kind laser show in the afternoon.  Then, at night, we bring back the family-favorite, BINGO.  Yummy treats wil be available for purchase and the Avon/Canton Rotary Club, in conjunction with the Avon Police Department, will offer Amber Alert registrations.

All week long, activities will be offered, ranging from dodgeball to beading to cartooning to cooking classes to aquatics games to flag football to teacher-led bike rides.  The list goes on and on.  Our SFW will wrap up on Friday, May 13th with our celebration picnic and family movie night!

We think this is shaping up to be one of the best Screen Free Weeks ever.  Hopefully, the students will agree with us!  As always, thanks so much for your endless support of PGS, the PTO and the variety of programs that we offer each year.  Here’s to being unplugged!!

Screen Free Week Programs

Golden Book
Students – check your desks between Friday, May 6th and Thursday, May 12th.  Each morning, one lucky student will have a Golden Book waiting for them!  Take the Book home that night and write down some Screen Free Week activities that you’ve done.  Bring the Book back to school the next morning – you’ll get to share your SFW activities with the whole school during morning announcements!

Tokens 4 Treasures
Fill out a TV token for each SFW activity that you complete – don’t forget to have it signed by a parent or other adult.  Activities can be those offered by the PTO or anything else that you do instead of “plugging in.”  Visit http://www.screenfree.org/screen-free-activities/ for links to suggested activities. Put your completed TV tokens in the boxes outside of the office – each box represents a different prize.  We have awesome prizes to give away such as YMCA day passes, a horseback riding lesson, passes to Soarin Indoors, a tour of ESPN and more!  The more tokens you complete, the better your chances to win!  Winners will be drawn at random.  Click here to download more TV TOKENS!

Lego Contest

Dump your LEGO bin and put your imagination to work!  Bring your creation into PGS Lobby on Monday, May 9th or Tuesday, May 10th, from 8:30am-8:50am.  Creations should not exceed 20 inches in length.  Judging will take place on Thursday, May 12th.  Awards ceremony to be attended by all participants on Friday afternoon, May 13th during school hours.  All creations must be taken home by the end of school on Friday, May 13th.  Download the form to accompany your submission.

REGISTRATION BEGINS - MONDAY, May 1st AT 8 PM
